Would you be willing to hunt wild boar or Grizzly Bear old school? With dogs and spears, in a group?
ByI am five foot four and 118 pounds. I run, go to the gym, I am in a soccer league, and I do yoga. I watch what I eat, and if I can’t see my abs when I lift my shirt, I go down to two meals a day. I most certainly could keep up with the hounds. Problem is, I don’t think I could do much once I got there. The spear would have to be AWFUL sharp, because upper body strength is not my forte.
On the other hand, most of the guys at the shooting range are pretty hefty. Many of them would outweigh most of the bears or pigs they went after. The problem is they would have a coronary or split their pants if they had to run a half block.
Would you be willing to hunt a dangerous animal Medieval style with nothing but cold steel on the end of an ash pole? With hounds, and a bunch of other guys, and some people on horseback? I would do it if we had a lot of big dogs and a lot of other guys. I figure all I have to do is run faster than the other guys, if the Grizzly breaks free of the dogs.

You are six foot tall, 265 pounds, and you claim you have no excess body fat? I think you need to have a look see at a height/weight chart.
Thinking Blade
Being fat and out of shape is an outstanding survival characteristic. Run with that one.

I’d rather use a gun and stay safe.

I made spears and bows and arrows when I was a boy and hunted some with them, but I didn’t hunt such dangerous game as wild boars or grizzlies with them. I see no need to do that when I have some fine rifles to use. I’m not a Luddite, after all. I’ve always been big and strong, and I was accurate with my spears and arrows, so I could do as well as anyone, but why take unnecessary chances with primitive weapons when we have guns? I’m 6’0″ tall and I’ve lifted barbells since I was 15 years old, so I weigh 240 to 265 lbs. without excess bodyfat. I can throw a spear very hard.

You don’t have to be a hulk of a man to kill a grizzly. You just have to know how to kill a grizzly. And you don’t need the dogs or a bunch of people. All you have to do is set up a bait station under a large tree and when he comes be able to throw your spear down accurately. If done correctly the weight of the spear combined with a very sharp blade will impale the bear and puncture its lungs. When a bear gets hit it will turn to bite the injured area. And if they cant see you they will just run off. As they run with that spear in them it will do even more damage to its internal oragans. The bear will bleed out in a few minutes. All you have to do is be silent and still for an hour to be sure. If you saw the spear hit in the wrong area you go home and come back to track it the next day and THIS time you bring the dog. If the bear is still able to attack it will attack the dog. If not your dog will find the bear dead.
So yep if it was legal and I was younger I would have no problem taking a bear with primitive weapons. In fact if it was legal I would just set a trap to kill it for me.
Primitive man found easy ways to kill animals that’s how they became top on the food chain.

we used to hunt black bears with nothing more than pocket knives and hickory sticks. But we only hunted where we knew there were no bears.

Yep, in fact their are people who do it regularly:
In fact in their case they don’t do it with a spear – it is done with knife. A big knife, but a knife none the less.
Now a bear? Definately would want a spear – grizzly meat is not really a favorite for eating so I doubt I would want to hunt one, but if one were hunting me, I would probably try and set it up as a dead fall. Incidently, either animal can easily outrun you and at least in the case of the bear, they aren’t interested terribly in stuff that either is or is playing dead. So when you run, you better be really fast, because he’s going to leave those “hefty” folks who have smartly armadilloed up on the ground and come after you as the interesting game.

If I were to do it in a group I would make sure that I did not go with any “cut and run” cowards.

I know guys who like to hunt hogs with dogs and a knife. That’s a little more excitement than I care for. And with timber the way it is, there aren’t any old-growth woods around here suitable for pig-sticking from horseback. If it were possible, though, that’s one of the few things that would get me up on one of the critters.
As for bears, the medieval guys weren’t hunting griz, which can kill a horse pretty quickly. And as for the Californios who roped them, I’d like to have some of what they were drinking (I’m sure it must have been good), but I’d stay home.

Q. Would you be willing to hunt wild boar or Grizzly Bear old school? With dogs and spears, in a group?
A. No. I value my skin a bit too much to do something that stupid. The only way I’d even consider hunting animals that dangerous that way would be if there were no other choice. Since there are other, safer, ways to hunt dangerous game…
