Great question! 5 is too early for shotguns. My kids usually start with the BB gun & 22 around 5 or 6, but the shotgun recoil is too big for a little kid. I let my 8 yo shoot a 20GA. for turkey season and I’m still trying to get the “flinch” out of his marksmanship even today (he’s now 16). Work your way up to a shotgun with practice on the rifles. Don’t push your kid too quick because YOU want him to go with you and wait until he’s ready. It’s diff. for every kid, but weight not age matter.

That’s how I learned too, BUT… the dogs are on the ground and the trail carry is MUCH better. Much more tiring too:) Thanks again for posting.

Cool im not trying to start an argument BUT you can shoulder a rifle and have it at the ground.

Listen to the instructor… safety first. We were simulating a flushing bird and even in the woods, they can surprise you. I told my son the same thing BEFORE this hunt (gun up & safety off when the dog goes on point), but I was wrong – this IS the correct way and is much safer for the dogs and everyone else around. We still got pheasant dinner:) Thanks for watching.

haha old dude has the ear things and letting the kid just shoot. Also you should always have a child shoulder the rifle before he says pull
