Which caliber rifle is better? A .270 or a .30-06? Why?
ByI buying my first rifle that I’m just planning on using for hunting deer and occasionally bringing it to the local gun club. It’s a Browning A-Bolt 26″ barrel. I just need to decide on a caliber. Either a .270 or a .30-06. Which is better? Which is better for hunting? Which is better for just bringing to the range? Are both of them capable of bringing down a deer? Just let me know what you think.

in my line of work, we see alot of criminal snipers, skin heads, and drug dealers armed with a .30-06.
it is a very inaccurate round to say the least, i have been fired at with a .30-06 over a hundred times, not once has one hit me, besides one grazing my scalp in the middle of a fire fight with some skin heads. if you HAVE to have one of these rounds, go with the .270. to all of you a holes that say rude things, im not a video game expert, im in command of a three man rapid response team, if you guys think your cool and know it all because you play modern warfare, come see a day in the life at my job, i assure you that you would be pissing your pants within a minute. i am a tacitical expert though, trained in the art of ninjitsu and trained by the spetsnaz, cia, and the italian mob. if you saw me face to face, you would regret it and wish you were never born.

One is not better then the other. The 270 will shoot flatter then the 30-06. But the 30-06 is better for bigger game. Both are great calibers and you can’t go wrong with either one. I do like the 270 a little better for deer.

Gecko45 is the latest of a long string of video game tactical experts… and I can promise you that his eyes are brown and he has really bad breath.
It’s a matter of preference and a subject that has been debated for many years and will be debated for many more years… and guess what. There is no right or wrong answer… it’s strictly preference.

Heywood is dead on.
I’ll add the 270 is faster and flatter but the ’06 has more power (because it uses a heavier bullet) and more recoil, but not by much. I like the 270 better.
In fact, the 270 uses the same exact case as a 30-06, it’s just necked down to accept a smaller diameter bullet. .277″ vs. .308″
If you look at federal’s website, they offer ballistic data on most rounds.

I have both a Rem 700 270 and a Remington 7400 semi auto in 30/06 , id say its a toss up where i live . The 30/06 has a far wider range of grain weights and is adapatible to almost any game even some varmits , the 270 is just a necked down version of the 30/06 , same cartridge smaller bullet , a little faster bullet and far flatter shooting than the 30/06. If i had to pick id have to take the 30/06 its a far better all over round.————————-The 30/06 in its Springfield version of ww1 and 2 and later in the M14 or the Remington 700 was the most deadly sniper rifle in the world .

Well gecko is an idiot. And a liar.
Both are good calibers. But still you have more variety in 30-06 in terms of you can get FMJ and SP in several grains. .270 is faster and was made for one purpose: hunting deer. And it does that job very well. But really only has 2 weights to choose from and all you can find is SP ammo, no FMJ unless its the really light 110-115 grain loads. Both will do the job but .270 is not suitable for the bigger stuff like brown/grizzly bear, moose or elk. Well .270 can take elk with a heavier round and good bullet tip like a nosler.
Both are still about $1 a pop to shoot.

Gecko45, Go back to mommies basement and play your vidiot games.
I like the .30-06, only because the Garand uses it. I am a great shot with it, and know the round very well from this gun. As which is better? Well, the .30-06 it a bit bigger, for larger game. If you only want to shoot deer, get the .270. It does less damage.
Either way you go, you will be happy.

I have a .270 and think it’s a fine caliber for most US game animals. Very common, not too expensive, readily available all around.
@ Gecko45:
BWAAA HA HA HA!! I told someone else earlier that they gave me the best laugh I’ve had all day. This was even better! Holy crap, i think I may need to go change my shorts.

I suggest the .270 Winchester. After reading what Jack O’connor wrote about it It became my favorite rifle cartridge.
Here’s some light reading on it:
The .270 Winchester
“What can I say about the .270 Winchester that was not said far more eloquently by Jack O’Connor, the greatest firearms writer of the 20th century? The most famous and by far the most successful full-length offspring of the .30-06 Springfield, the .270 had it all back in 1925 when it was introduced and still has it all today. Need a flat-shooting, mild-recoiling, super-accurate cartridge for shooting deer-size game at long range? The .270 loaded with a good 130-grain bullet fills the bill with room to spare. Heading out west for an elk or moose hunt? Don’t overlook the .270 loaded with a premium-grade bullet weighing 150 grains. Does your shoulder scream out in protest each time you squeeze the trigger on that new .409 Pooper-Scooper Magnum? If so, relief in the form of a .270-caliber rifle is no further away than your friendly gunshop.”

This is an easy question to answer. I have a 270W and my son has a 30-06. Without a doubt, the 270W is best. No, hang on, the 30-06 is best. Umm, no hang on, wait a bit, the 270W is far better. Umm -ahh hang on a sec, the 30-06 is the better one, no! its the 270W etc etc
I love my 270, it takes every type of game here in Aust. from feral dogs to buffalo It is very versatile and hard hitting. I’m not sure what the ballistic coefficients of similar weight projectiles are but the differences might give you a guide. In the end, the final choice becomes a personal one and the discussion on these two rounds will never end.
