We have 40 acres of timber to hunt in Pike County Illinois. I hunt mostly for deer but do like to hunt squirrel and rabbit, pheasant. Guns I use are a .54 caliber black powder rifle for deer along with a Remington 870 express 12 ga. for deer. My little Ruger 10-22 rifle will do for squirrels and I can change barrels on my shotgun for rabbits and pheasants. I live in the far SW suburbs of Chicago-land. I have 33 guns, so I open my safe and pick one for whatever I want to try to hunt that day. There are whitetail deer, black bears, turkeys, grouse, coyotes, bobcats, foxes, fox squirrels, and plain old gray squirrels here. Tomorrow is opening day of bow season for deer. My thrill is bowhunting for deer.It's like 2 different worlds in this state. in the central part and farther south, it's a world of beautiful lakes and bayous connecting them, with cypress trees lining the banks and the waters, you can go take a stand for deer in the swamplands and watch gators, ducks and otters play and feed in the waters. You can run a boat and motor from daylight to dark,and not see a tenth of it.It's beautiful with a prehistoric look in certain areas. Then there is the northern part of the state, with mixed hardwoods and pines, crystal clear creeks, with snow white sands fed by underground springs, lined by massive oak trees dropping acorns on the sand bars that are covered with deer tracks. Flocks of turkeys keep you entertained while on deer stand. These are the places that I hunt in and call home.It's a beautiful country, and I feel blessed and lucky to enjoy it like I do. You are right about the female dogs being smarter then the males.You can probably make the argument that this applies to the human species as well. I hunt about 15 miles from my home now. We had a Farm near there for many years. Me and my oldest daughter get together along with old friends and neighbors.
