a .45 handgun preferably, one u stole from your brother!!!! They work best when ur on the roads!!!!

  2. Josh says:

I think you meant a 30-06. Pronounced “ought six”. That is a great caliber for deer and elk, depending on which cartridge you use. It’s also about the most popular and easiest to find ammo for. Look at a Remington 700. You won’t be disapointed.

  3. John says:

.270, .30-06, .308 is more than enough power for a deer

  4. Keoni C says:

Wow Bizzoid, this is actually a tough question.

When you say deer rifle do you mean rifle brand or caliber.
There are many calibers that will take down a deer.
    .243win, .270win, .308 and .30-06 are my personal favorites.
I know there are many more that people have used and love.

If you’re new to shooting rifles then the .243 is great because it doesn’t have terrible recoil. I personally don’t feel that a magnum round is necessary for deer.

If you’re asking what rifle to use, the answer is just as long. There are many good rifles to be had. The venerable Remington 700 BDL or CDL is still considered a great rifle. (it’s the best selling rifle of all time) If you’re willing to spend a little more money, the Browning A-bolt II is a fabulous rifle. Savage makes some very inexpensive rifles that are great starter rifles.

I have a Tikka T3 lite Stainless/Synthetic in .270win that is my personal favorite on most deer hunts. I really love this rifle and it isn’t an expensive gun. I shoot it very well.

There are so many good rifles out there.
Use what you like, feel confident with, and can shoot well. Be careful of your shot placement (more important than the rifle, caliber, or scope you’re using) and you’ll have venison on the table.

ive always liked the 30-06, the .270, and the .7mm my self.
heres a video of a guy hunting deer with a 30-06.

as you can see in the video the 30-06 can be deadly on deer, the shot the man in the video made was dead on and dropped the deer were he stood. i prefer the 30-06 myself and the 30-30.

youve been in the military five years and know nothing of calibers, you “bagged”your first deer and dont know what you used and being a cook in the ARMY taking occasional trips to the rifle range dont necessarilly make you experienced.you only have to hit 15 out of thirty to qualify.I still would like to know how you ran over a deer in a boat

  7. clive says:

it all depends on what type of terrain you will be hunting. for open terrain my personal favorite is 243win. or a more brushy terrain i would prefer a 30-30. Or if you will be hunting a combination of terrains id go with the 30-06. its good for long and shorter distances. and all have plenty of knock down power.

  8. the_maine_guide says:

The answer depends on what type of terrain you are hunting. If you live out west, or hunt around large open areas, such as large farms, then you want a flat shooting long range setup (typically a bolt action or single shot), because you may be looking at shots from 200-400 yards. However, if you live in Michigan’s UP, or New England, for instance, where the terrain is more woody and brushed in, then have a firearm that is capable of fast follow up shots (typically a lever action, semi-auto, or pump) is more of what you need.
I shy away from recommending a caliber to anyone unless they specifically ask. What I do talk about is what type of shots they might be taking, and the energy of the round when fired. Most experts agree that you need at least 1,000 ft. lbs. of energy at point of impact to humanely harvest a deer sized animal. Find a gun that fits your style of hunting and check the ballistic charts to make sure it will have that minimum amount of energy at the shot distances you will be making. Then practice!

    Remington 700 in 308win,270win,or 30-06

  10. dca2003311@yahoo.com says:

Pick any of these for Deer.*. 30-06, 308, 270, 243 Winchester, 32 Winchester Special, 30-30 Winchester, 30-40 Krag, 303 British, 6mm, or 8mm Mauser..* Remington or Savage Brand in a bolt-action…*

  11. the long shot says:

I don’t believe your story. its 30-06 and thats a caliber not a brand of gun. Most military guys have an affinity for 7.62 Nato or 308 Win so I say if thats what you are used to shooting, buy a Savage Model 10 or Remington 700 chambered in that round.

  12. Chris says:

What is your area that you hunt like?

    brush?prairie?forest?desert?

    It all makes a difference.

But I think that a Remington 700 in 30-06 Springfield will serve you best in most situations.

  13. rwd2meter_reader says:

I can only speak from my personal experience. When I got to boot camp (43 years ago) they handed me a M1 Garand chambered in “yacht 36″? We got to be very familiar with the weapon and the round in less than 5 years. More like 11 weeks. LOL!

I would recommend that the “yacht 36″ is a perfect deer round and capable of taking most any game on the North American Continent. Most gun store employees, who haven’t spent a lot of time in the military, will be more familiar with the term “ought 6″, than yacht 36………..

  14. fengineer08 says:

A good bolt action rifle chambered in 30-06 Springfield.

The 30-06 is by far the most versatile hunting round on Earth, it is a legend.

The grain selection is huge. You can hunt almost anything with that rifle.

The 30-06 will kill small game all the way up to a 1200 pound bull moose.

  15. mike says:

    Bolt action. 30-06. Good luck.

  16. David Devoted says:

I just want to give kudos to “Josh” for picking up the whole “yacht 36″ actually means “30.06.” That shows a good understanding of both the English language, and how certain people struggle at using it.

  17. Reb says:

    Remington 700
    Winchester 70
    Ruger M77
    Savage 110
    Marlin XLT

look for one in .30-06 lots of different rounds you can get. A .270 winchester is another good round.

  18. Intersect says:

your first answer by Josh is right on the money, the only thing I would
add would be if you have any sensitivity concerns about recoil you may want to take a small step down to a .270 you can use it with some managed recoil rounds like those made by remington. My 12 year old son uses it with excellent results. The Remington 700 is an excellent economical choice, as would be the Mossberg 100 ATR.

  19. rem700adl30_06 says:

It’s been said that a 30-06 could drop anything in north america, thats why I hunt with it. as for the rifle? I have been a liking to my ruger m77 hawkeye.

  20. Qbnsizzle says:

Military for 5 years huh,… Impressive. Were you a Green Beret or a Navy Seal because with your extensive knowledge and expertise with the yacht 36 you must have been SOME kind of “Special Forces”… either that or “Special Ed”… come on kid… stop it…

  21. JebusHero says:

How much $$$ you looking to spend.

An SKS shooting 7.62 soviet is real inexpensive, though you gotta compensate for it’s sever drop, not good if the ranges commonly vary. Good for anything under 150 yrds (with confidence).

A remington 700 in .308 are GREAT dear rifles, as are the Savage models which are exceptional; less expensive, better built, much better accuracy out of the box.

Don’t like ought six, too heavy, everyone’s different of course.

  22. william says:

A good camera would b better

  23. zipper says:

I would suggest a bolt action, less to go wrong with it, and I will through more rounds at you. Remington 280, Spanish 7mm Mouser,6.5 Swish Mouser, 30-40 Krag . But for all around Deer Hunting 270 or 30/06 or 8mm Mouser. I agree you do not need a Magnum to take deer. Just a gun with a strong round that you enjoy shooting.

  24. Andy M says:

bolt action or pump action .30-06 Springfield is probably one of the best and most versatile cartridges. More than plenty knock-down power and makes great long shots too (if you know what you’re doing).

  25. akluis says:

    yacht 36

You mean ‘thirty – aught – six’ or sometimes just ‘aught- six’

See, aught is slang for zero.

30-06 is how it is written. It comes from 30 caliber bullet and the year 1906, when this round was invented.

Economically, the best bet right now is probably the Marlin XL7
Best Buy in firearms is probably Weatherby Vanguard Synthetic
All around good rifle, moderate price range, Remington 700 SPS
All around good rifle, higher end price range, Browning Medallion A Bolt

30-06 is a great cartridge choice for all around hunting, but I prefer the 270 winchester (note, it is named winchester because they invented it, not because you need a winchester rifle to use it) which is the 30-06 cartridge case with it’s neck squeezed down to .277 rather than .308 like the 30-06

  26. EJ says:

I would recommend a .308 Winchester, in the following Rifles (the rifles are also available in 30-06):

    1) Savage 110
    2) Remington 700
    3) Winchester Model 70
    4) Howa 1500
    5) Marlin
    6) Mossberg ATR-100

If you prefer a Lever Action, I recommend a 30-30 in:
    1) Marlin
    2) Winchester
    3) Legacy

Remember, you should spend as much or more on the scope as you do your gun.

  27. Kyle S says:

Yacht 36? IDK, however I do know that the 30-06 was the first center fire rifle cartridge I used and the one I still love most to this day. I have right now a CZ 550 American in 30-06. Another gun to consider if you don’t want ot spend big bucks is the WWII Mosin Nagant. I have an M44 that also does more than good enough for deer.

  28. Phillip J says:

    308, 260, 243, 270, 280, 30-06, 7mm-08, 7mm, 300, 338

  29. Jeff says:

yacht 6 it is. You bagged a deer with what you “belive(d) ” to be a yacht 6…go for it again.

  30. Ranger J says:

    I am calling BS.

  31. Larry D says:

.308 and 30-06 are my favorite but I think the best still might be the 30-30.

    I like Remington 700′s.

  32. dutton_1 says:

    just stick with you 30-06.

  34. Steve says:

Where are you going to be hunting and how far do you inticipate a shot?

    A 30-06 or a .270. For close brushy area a 30-30 does good.
