What is the fascination with firearms?
ByI’m not against owning weapons. I have swords, knives, spears, battle axes, crossbows, and other hand weapons. I just don’t understand why a person would want to own something that make killing extremely easy. I can see owning a hunting rifle if you’re into hunting, although I prefer to use a bow. I just don’t see any use any other type of firearm. Please try to enlighten me.
jidinphilly, You totally miss what the my question is all about. I’m not saying that Police Officers should use crossbows. . I’m trying to understand WHY people like firearms. I’m not saying that peope shouldn’t own them, just don’t understand why they own them.
I happen to prefer edged weapons, like to hunt with a bow. I also don’t use tree stands, but prefer to track the animal. But that doesn’t mean that I think no one else should use them, just I prefer not to.
John D, I see you’re another one who is totally cluless. I guess you think everyone should love and use frearms. You come across to me as close minded.
I dont’t need a gun to defend myself. I can defend myself with edged weapons, and my knowledge of Hoshin Ryu just fine.

There are gun collectors, just like stamp, coin, etc. collectors. I really see no purpose in owning an assault weapon, although, I myself own 3 or 4 hunting rifles, and a handgun.

Same reason people own baseballs – they’re used as a hobby for many people.
Also, many own guns for personal protection.

Well some are used for personal defense. I keep and maintain firearms that aren’t generally found in civillian hands because I have remarkable security concerns. But I’ll agree, firearms were never meant to be the end all be all, just a means to it.

For protection. It is a right given to us by the Constitution.
It is in place, because our Founding Fathers knew that FREE people, can protect themselves.
Being armed prevents Dictators from taking over – Unarmed people are much easier to control.

People are different and enjoy different things. I collect coins and fancy platters, and think it odd to collect knives, but to each his own. It takes all kinds. Go on ebay and see the ridiculous crap people are fascinated with, it’s mindbogglingly.

When used safely, they’re fun.
My father saw the beauty in their construction and could give detailed lessons on different models and years.
I’m at a shooting range often. I don’t hunt, but I love target shooting. Under the supervision of my father (who has been dead over twenty years now) I have fired an automatic weapon. I see the thrill in it when used not to hurt someone. I honestly would never want to point one at a fellow human being though.
Thanks to my father, unless I’m in the military, I never will. If he taught me anything at all, he taught me the importance of gun safety.

So by your logic, police should be using cross bows instead of hand guns? And by your logic, when YOU are killing somebody, you want it to be harder to do? I just bought my first hand gun about 2 months ago. I have always had knives and swords just like you. When I go to the range, I find it relaxing to shoot. You have to be calm and relaxed to be accurate. And when I get home, I actually enjoy taking the gun apart and cleaning it just like the pleasure one finds from sharpening their favorite knife.
Ok.. then the second part of my answer , should answer your question.

So you’re saying that you’d rather hack someone to death (savor the moment, if you will), than shoot them? Okaaaay.
As I see it, there are three reasons why people own firearms.
1. Hunting. I’m no hunting advocate (especially if you don’t eat/donate your kill), but it’s a right if you’re licensed, and some people like it.
2. Sport. Just like golf or baseball, hitting targets with a gun is a sport.
3. Self defense. I don’t care who you are; if someone breaks into your house with a shotgun and you run at them with a sword, you stand little to no chance.

You don’t understand why a person would want something that makes killing extremely easy? Then, clearly, it is more of an issue of you being clueless than John D. Firearms have been the most effective means of personal defense for several hundred years and will remain so for the foreseeable future. I have a gun for hunting, but I have more for the defense of myself and my family from criminals and governments. Those of us choosing to be prepared cannot understand why anyone would intentionally leave their loved ones more vulnerable than they have to be to rape, murder, assault, etc.
Why do you choose NOT to be prepared to defend those you love?
