What is the best time to hunt Coyote?
Byi would like to knw the best time of day to hunt coyote in Connecticut. where would be the best place to look for them, (terrain-wise), from a stand or on the ground. what calls are the best to use. i have a 30-30 winchester zeroed in for 100 yards, good for up to around 250. Is this enough gun? also, has anyone around CT had any luck with these things.

never hunted them in Ct before but in Ne we hunt them several ways through out the whole day. early morning and dusk prove to be better
1. sitting over a deer gut pile after the deer has been removed from the area. Using Distress calls.
2. Sittin in bale blinds in a open corn ot bean field with a wounded rabbit decoy available at hunting supply stores again using distress calls
3. Sitting on top of a ridge over looking a field. Again using decoys and distress calls
4. Running them in trucks…..hit all the draws that are known in the area making a loud ruckuss…when the coyotes bolt chase them and shoot them.
5. 30-30 is ok but it is more of a brush gun Id recommend something more along the line of a .243, .270 22/250 or .308 for the longer shots.

22 hornet bolt action is perfect us 223 hollow point with scope. early evening. I use a baby moniter put it out about 100yrs away sit just inside wood line 1st/2nd tree in about 16 ft up full camo with cloth remember coyotes can see the steam coming up around you if they look your way set up 1 hour before dark settle down for 15 min before useing call I like wounded rabbit call but any varmint call will do don’t for get the pine sent to mask your smell spray it on every thing. night vision is best but depends on your local laws. I stop at farms tell them I want to set up on there property and hunt coyotes. no rules on there property other than there’s. need open area with cover/ditch close by. luck 30-30 will be ok but need 100yrds min distance. Have shot from 300yrs common.LUCK

Yes, as others have said, early morning, and late in the day. You can get electronic predator calls, on mp3. (if legal in your area) and battery powered moving “rabbits” to attract the coyotes. Search yahoo answers, this was covered a couple weeks ago.
For your 30-30 , Remington makes a special round called the accelerator. It features a 55 grain bullet that is fast. You will have to sight in your rifle with this different ammo, but it will do the job for you and give you more distance. However, if your 30-30 is a lever action, these are pointed bullets so you can’t load them in a tubular magazine. I think you could load one in the chamber and one in the magazine and that would give you a follow up shot.

i would not go and buy stuff if you have gun cause thats all you need shoot a rabbit in the gut to make it scream or cry what ever you want to call it but that all i use but use a call sometimes if i dont see a rabbit or if you dont have a call or see a rabbit i would use a piece of deer for bate i know i said all need is a gun but most the that all you need and you can go hunting them any time but the best time is night time and 30-30 is a good gun

i have been hunting coyotes for years here in southern indiana,i have the best luck at dusk and dawn, but with a spot light on your gun (if legal in your state) has also worked well for me. cass creek electronic call has worked we for me.i too have used the 30-30 on coyote in the past,if anything it may be too much gun within the 100 range, but better more then not enough…i would suggest a 22-250 in your future if you want to get serious into hunting the,you can reasonably take them up to 300 yards.i like to find woodland that borders open areas and set up the foilage…a decoy in the open often helps also………good luck and happy hunting

The best time to go hunting for coyotes is if you give the coyote a bulletproof vest, a rifle with a scope, and a 30-second head start.
Then it would be a sport!
Shooting unarmed helpless animals is not my idea of a sport.

Early mornings work for me…… The 30/30 is a fine rifle for coyote. It may be a tad bit big for a coyote but if its what you have go ahead and use it.

While many say evening and morning, they seem to be much more active in my area at night, and are legal to hunt with a light. That being said, Night-vision is very beneficial, and the use of a squealling rabbit decoy, is an excellent recommendation. As for the weapon, a 30-30 isn’t probably the best weapon, but is usable. I’d prefer a smaller bore high velocity round, such as a .223, .22-250, or .243, and have the scope “zero’d” at 200yds, or if you are dealing with them at short range, a 12ga w/ buckshot might also be an excellent option. Calling them from the ground is usually sufficient, but it’s best to try to mask your scent as was mentioned, and set-up where they will be approaching from a “shootable” direction.

IN general, the best time of day to hunt coyotes is at night. The best call is a “rabbit in distress” call. The few times I have hunted them it was from a short stand about 6 feet off the ground. I used a red light to spot them once they moved in close enough to see them. The .30-30 is fine for hunting them but because you are hunting at night and cannot see 250 yards and a .30-30 is generally accepted as being suited for shots not to exceed 150 yards, you might as well zero it for 100 yards. Actually, a .30-30 is best suited for shots of 100 yards or less. Perhaps this new lever gun ammo with the spire points will give you a bit more range with your .30-30 but there is no way on God’s green earth that you can make a 250 yard gun out of it.
