I hunt with my Beagles. They are the best pets also.

My dad’s cousin has a beagle that is really good at hunting rabbits. It also beat up my rottweiler last year.

Mini Dachshunds were specifically bred to hunt rabbit but you may need to find ones where they refer to them as teckels as these are the ones that have retained their working instinct. They tend to have a slightly longer leg length than the show varieties.

    A dachshund actually.

I’m jaded since I breed them *lol*, but they have the best noses. And were, in recent years, used for hunting rabbits.

The plus over the beagles is that the beagle will take you to the rabbit or the hole, thats pretty much it.
The miniature dahchsund will go IN the hole and bring Bugs out for you *lol*

Dachshaunds I think used to be bred for that because they are small, low to the ground & can get in the rabbit’s burrows. We have had about 5 Dachshaunds in my life time & we live out in the country & they go kill rabbits, skunks & coons just for the heck of it we didnt even train them to do that, they just do that because it is in their blood! But I think that any small fast dog could hunt rabbits! I hope this helps! :)

Beagles are a very good dog for that, and they make good pets, but they are full of enery. So if you can deal with a lot of energy that’s the breed for you. Basset hounds hunt rabbit, and are alittle more mellow then a Beagle, with their short little legs and stocky build they get worn out easier. there is another hound also-I think it’s a foxhound ,but not sure that will hunt rabbit, I have never been around them to know what they are like.

    you killed a bunny!!!

Fox terriers and Jack Russell terriers are perfect for digging into rabbit holes. I also use beagles to flush them out, but the terrier is a great hunter if you train it young.

I agree with the others, beagles are great rabbit dogs. If you are serious about a hunting beagle may I suggest that you actually contact a field trial beagle breeder. Not all beagles are bred to hunt. I know that it is instinctive for them to hunt, but that does not mean they will. With a field trial beagle at least you know that the parents were good hunters. I’m expecting a new beagle in a few days and I ordered him from a field trial breeder because I knew what I wanted him for. Another plus, beagles make great family dogs as well. They are very lovable and work for kisses and love.
