Rem 700 Stainless, Ruger Stainless, and the Browning X bolt Stainless. The browning has the 26 inch barrel for the extra range and velocity of a magnum round. The Rem has the strongest bolt and a 24 inch barrel and a hell of a rep. The ruger has the purist stainless steel of any brand and is extremely well balanced and the right weight for a magnum round with the 24 inch barrel as well. I had one in the Rem 700 BDL Stainless detachable clip, and loved it. And I have a buddy here with me that just bought one in the X bolt Stainless for $850. The one I purchased a couple yrs back was $525 brand new on sale, not bad.

I have been using a 338 win mag in a browning stainless stalker for 17 years now. I couldn’t even guess how many deer, elk, and antelope (even a prairie dog or two) I’ve shot. I love that gun. It is more accurate than it has any right to be, and the stock fits like a glove. That helps with the recoil more than you can appreciate. I’ve shot 30-06′s that seem to have more recoil than my 338. Also the browning has a 26″ barrel, which will help pick up an additional 75 fps or so. Second choice would be a Ruger, but don’t get the old stainless model with a semi-skeletonized stock. Those things can flat kick. The new synthetic stocks they use are way better. Also be aware that a Ruger will only have a 24″ barrel. My favorite bolt action rifle right now is the cz550, but I don’t think they are available in a 338 win mag. Also, I would strongly recommend the federal premium ammo with a 210 grain nosler partition bullet or equivalent handload. They hit like a mack truck and penetrate very well.

Oh boy, lots of good choices at that range.

For starters, I’d look for an all-weather stock, so synthetic or laminated composite wood. Specialty treated barrel finish or stainless steel barrel is also good

Weatherby Vanguard SubMOA is the first thing that springs to mind. You can get one blued, but I’d go with stainless synthetic

Browning Xbolt is another solid choice, again, synthetic stainless

In the Remington 700 line, i’d go with the XCR for extreme condition rifle

Two things beyond your question i’d consider….

In grizzly and Kodiak country, a semiauto can be VERY useful Brownign BAR comes in 338 winmag

Second, if you are thinking of going Weatherby, consider the 340 Wby, it packs even more whallop.
