Savage offers package deals on many calibers for around 450-500$. These are bolt action synthetic stocked guns which come mounted with a scope. Although the scope is a low end model it should be sufficient for hunting until you can afford better glass. I have this rifle in 7 mm mag and love the gun although I have upgraded to a better scope
Savage is a great deal and don’t forget to look at the new Marlin XL7C series if you would consider a .270 or 7mm Mag; they MSRP at only $356.00. Toss a Nikon ProStaff on there and you are right at $500 – give or take 20 bucks. The Mossberg ATR is right around that range.
Just avoid the Remington 770….that gun is not worthy of the Remington moniker at all….
The Savage Model11G. This rifle has a hardwood stock and comes with open sights and their famous AccuTrigger (works great and is user adjustable). You can save up for good glass for example a Bushnell Elite 3200 scope (about $180+) when you have the money. This way you will have a solidly built good quality lifetime rifle that you can still use until you have money for the scope. You didn’t mention whether or not the $500. included the scope, I assumed that it did. I have attached some links that you may find helpful.
YOu can go with savage and they are great rifles. There is also H&R Handie rifles these are single shot low cost rifles that will come in many different calibers.
Rossie also makes a single shot rifle I believe.
Also look at used rifles. Many times you can find an older Remington 700 for a decent price.
$500 is more than enough to get a good rifle. I’d suggest one of the Savage brand bolt actions. A local gunshop here has a nice package, the Savage rifle, free floated barrel, a 3-9x40mm scope mounted and bore sighted all for $399.00 in any caliber you want.
Look for sales, this is the time of year for them, and you can find some great prices on them.
shoot safe
At ~ $500, check out the used rack at the local shop.
there are lotsa guys who have to ‘trade-up’ for the latest new
model, and well cared for trade ins are a bargain.
You might find a nice Ruger or Browning in that range.
Remington is also a good choice…. My local big box sporting goods store has the Remington 700 SPS Varmint .308 scoped combo (4-12×40) in OD green on sale for $449….. Of course this includes the $50 rebate Remington is offering….
