I live in Texas, and the only rifle I’ve ever hunted with is my trusty Winchester Model 94 .30-30. In the heavy brush of central Texas, there’s not much need for a long range gun, and the .30-30 is heavy enough to punch through brush if necessary. But this past year, I hunted in Southwest Texas, and passed on several deer that were too far away to trust my open sights and 53 year old eyes. So I just bought a German 8mm Mauser with a scope, so I’m ready for next season. The ballistics are very similar to a .30-06, and if I wanted to buy a new rifle, the .30-06 would be my first choice. It is powerful enough to knock down any game animal in Texas up to 250-300 yards, has medium recoil, and there is a great variety of ammo available for it.
well i live in texas my favorite rifle for hogs and deer is my ruger mkII 22-250 not much recoil fast accurate cal. everyone says that the 22-250 is enough guess ill open the freezer and tell all the deer and hogs that they should be dead. just my 02 cents
i live in texas and have always used 30-06 its the perfect texas hunting rifle. with 150 grain for smaller deer and 180 for the bigger ones. i have never had to track a deer

25-06 as Texas deer tend to be small.
Even a .221 Fireball will work, some Texans use these to shoot out of car windows at deer. I don’t recommend it at all, but they do it sure enough.
