Turkey Hunting Legalities In Illinois & Location Reccomendations?

By

Hey Everyone, I live in the northwest suburbs of Chicago. I legally own a shotgun & obviously have a FOID card.

I’ve always wanted to go turkey hunting and would like to know what kinds of permits / licenses / stamps I need, where they can be obtained and how much they cost.

Additionally, I’d love to hear any recommendations and tips. Especially about good locations. I was thinking Starved Rock area, perhaps Matthiessen State Park?

Thanks!!!

Hey man, I’m from the lake county area just north of you. IL is a really tough state to start hunting in. There isn’t much for public land within three hours of us and whatever there is its gonna be packed with other hunters. Wisconsin has millions of acres of public land that are packed with turkey. I’m not gonna give away any of my spots but I drive an hour to a place in walworth county, wi. and every opening morning for the last 5 years, my dad and i have both gotten a bird. An out of state license is more expensive but for the experience its definitely worth it. All of the legal info can be found at the WDNR website. Theirs just too many laws to list for ya on here. Call Gander mountain if you have questions. It may seem confusing at first but once you figure it out, its all common sense. WDNR website also has a map of all the public land in the state. As for tips, read lots of books and watch lots of tapes about turkey hunting. HS Strut has a dvd out called “So you wanna be a turkey Hunter” and that’s where I learned the basics. After you learn the basics, you need to get in the woods and do as much scouting as possible. That’s the most important thing. I could go on and on about turkey hunting because it is Truly my favorite animal to hunt. It is a great time and will be an experience that you will never forget. All the technicalities may seem overwhelming but please, get through all that legal stuff and do it. I promise you that it ll be worth it. The out of state license is under $80 and if you dont get your application in for the lottery (you’ll know what im talking about) they do a first come first serve extra turkey permits in mid Feb. Good luck and I hope to see ya in the turkey woods.
