The ideal place would be MSU’s campus, however that’s highly frowned upon, even though you about trip over squirrels the size of small cats!
In all seriousness, any woods is going to have squirrels, it’s even better if you can find a nearby food source, acorns, corn field, etc. And of course squirrel nests are an obvious give away. They can be found all over the state in decent numbers.
Like most game mornings & evenings tend to be the best times although I’ve had luck at other times as well. The best part about squirrel hunting is it can be easily done with minimal equipment. appropriate clothing for the weather, a .22 and something orange, a decent pair of boots and you can make it work. I would recommend a small game or bird hunting orange vest if you plan on doing much walking, you can just shove them in the back and not worry. Some people like using a call, which can be found for minimal cost although I’ve never tried one so I can’t vouch for their effectiveness.
