It is a good hobbie/interest for your child….The dogs shouldnt really come into it because the loft should be well lifted so the dogs would not be near the roost…In saying that, here in N. Ireland if you are putting an addition to you house if it is more that 8ft high you need planning premission. I dont know if your laws are the same.
Neil is right. Shouldn’t be any problem. I have pigeons and hunting dogs and they really don’t have any way to get together.
It’s a wonderful hobby and there are many ways to take it. Racing birds is a big deal and can be extremely expensive or you can do it just for fun. There are many people renting white homers for release at weddings and such. That’s what we’re planning on doing in the future.
Most pigeon people are wonderful and love to help youngsters get started in the hobby.
I’m sure if you do a search you could find some pigeon clubs near you.
I’m going to admit right up front I have never owned a homing pigeon. I do have two thoughts on the subject though. In the rescue I am involved w/ one time we took in a racing peg eon. When the owner was located & came over he said oh this was a rookie & thought he was dead. He let him go at & said hopefully he’d make it home. He said over 30% disappeared presumed to have been eaten by a hawk. Can your son deal w/ that? Most kids get super excited over things & when the tedium of care comes into play they quickly lose interest & often the bird gets horribly neglected. We suggest for parents to get a pet for themselves hoping to involve their kids. Answer these questions for yourself & do your research about this species thoroughly. Have a great day!
The dogs will be fine, but can your 12 year old take care of a pigeon?
Pigeons make great pets but homers can sometimes be high strung they are athletes if your kid wants a pet pigeon I would try a fantail or rollers or jacobins are very cool too there are hundreds of breeds of pigeon just like dogs and each one is different in there own way the other problem is that if you get an adult racer(homer) they do not understand that you just changed homes and will fly back to the place it was raised.
12 year old is plenty old enough to take care of pigeons. I started when I was twelve (almost a half century ago) and still have the birds (well, not the same ones
If you’re in the U.S. go to and you can search not only for local clubs, but also they will send you a small booklet to help you get started
