Pet Mice, Should I Get One (Or A Couple)?

I really want a pet mouse. There are some problems though !
My mom hates mice
I have 2 cats and a dog
Only one cat actually hunts mice, but he’s hardly in my room which is where I plan to keep the mouse. Should I get a mouse ? I’m afraid of them but I think I can cope with a pet one, and my mom will probably allow me to get one. If I should get one what do you think I should do to work with it all ?
My plan was to get a (Used?) fish tank (A big one) and put all the accesories in there, with a lid (WIth Holes) so my cat couldn’t get it. If that’s a bad idea what kind of cage should I get ?

Also if anyone has some good mouse training/handling/caring for etc. websites please tell me so I can check them out, thanks !

um, doesnt sound like the best of ideas…how ’bout a hamster?

whatever, i can tell you this, DO NOT get a couple or you will soon have hundereds. if you want a white mouse and your mom agrees, just get ONE of them, no couples!

the rest of your plan is ok. get it a wheel too and be prepared to clean is cage often, (they poop a lot and can become quite the stink).

ever consider a red eared slider turttle? excellent pets although not very affectionate. it’s geat to watch them eat guppies though.

you could get a wire hamster cage. that would be easier to hang it’s water bottle. you will have to keep kitty away from it or the rodent will be constantly stressed out. and that cat will focus on that cage! hamster or mouse. turttle would be easier.

Yes. if you want a mouse get one. (though that is a strange pet).

use the fish tank if your afraid of it….

why have a pet if your afraid of it? over coming your fear? awkward

I have owned mice all my life, i’m a big rodent fan. Lol. And I own two cats, and my mice have been fine. (My cat is always in my room.) As for the cage, I have exactly as you said, a fish aquarium, I believe it is 15′ by 8′ or something close to that with a screen top. You could go to a pet store and get the lids for them. I DON”T recommend te plastic tanks AT ALL! My mice chewed right through it when I got one. Also, I would recommend a female mouse, for one, they don’t stink twice as bad, and they are easier to clean up after. If you have any other questions feel free to contact me at . As i have said, I have had mice all my life, and currently have 7. They are great pets and you never know, your mom might just grow accustomed to them and learn to really like them. Contact me if you have questions. : )
    Good luck!

I could never convince my mom to let me bring a pet mouse in her house. So we compromised and she allowed me to bring home a Hamster.

Keeping Sugar in my bedroom became a bad idea at night because I am a light sleeper, and Hamsters as well as mice are nocturnal. This means she would chew her wood blocks and run on her wheel while I was trying to sleep. So I would have to move her out to the dining room and take the cat into my bedroom so that I would still have a hamster in the morning.

I have had a pet mouse, yes if you can be careful with the cats like when you put the mouse his/her ball to roll around in careful! one or two but males can be dominant. I was scared of mine too, so I used gloves when I handed him it helped and sorry but you honestly should not use a fish tank

We have had mice for a few years. We bred two very nice mice and were surprised to find that some of the babies were biters even though they had all been raised the same with plenty of gentle handling. So I would think twice about breeding mice because some of the offspring can be very scary and it’s hard to get rid of them because you know they are going to bite somebody. Our male mouse was mellow like mice you see in the movies, but none of the children were so calm that they could sit still. The brothers started fighting when they grew up. It didn’t look like they could work things out and we finally separated them after a near fatal altercation. The girls got along OK, but they definitely set up a pecking order. They did allow non-relative female members into the group without too much fighting. So I would say one boy or several girls would make nice pets. Take your time and have the pet store guru help you find and hold a gentle mouse. If there aren’t any nice ones on the day you go to the pet store, try another time. The mice don’t have to be non-biters for you to enjoy watching them, but it helps a lot if they are nice.

Our cat hasn’t gotten into the aquarium, but he’s more of a watcher and not real smart to figure out how to get in a cage. I don’t let him in the room when I am opening the cages so he doesn’t get any ideas. His weight has bowed the black mesh hinged aquarium top and the sucker feet that hold things down don’t last too long, the clips are secure but a pain to get into. The cat getting at the rodents is always a worry, especially at night when we are sleeping and the rodents are the most active and have his keen interest. We put him in the basement most nights to keep the birds and rodents safe and definitely when we aren’t home.

I had 2 pet mice and they make good pets cept that they r nocternal so its not a good idea to keep them in your room. The aquarium sounds good. That is what i kept mine in. Just DON’T get a plastic cage. They chew right through it. The cats probly won’t bother it and your dog won’t hurt it. But mice only live for around a year and if you and your mom are afraid of it i say don’t get one. They arn’t all that sociable and tend to bite. I would suggest getting a guinea pig. I have one now and Im going to get anouther for Christmas. They arn’t nocternal so you can keep them in your room and they are really sweet and are sorta like minature dogs while mice are just mice. Oh and cats actually get along with guinea pigs well. Dogs on the other hand depend if you have a couch potatoe they probly won’t notice. If u have a dog that is a little rambunctious i would keep them seperated. Hope this helps.
