Ok, last question about hunting and rifles.?

Sorry for another question but i promise this is the last for a while. Any way my price range is $800 MAX. I want a new .270 caliber with a descent scope. is this possible? if not would it be possible to get a .243 caliber and descent scope? Oh i live in hawaii so i cant buy guns online or from street vender’s or what ever you call them. So expect rather high prices. Thanks
Oh and it has to be bolt action!!

Go with a Savage. They’re priced low enough that you should be able to get a scope of your choice with it.

You are in a seller’s market, take whatever you can get.

  3. tempestv says:

you should be able to get a good savage for somewhere around $400, maybe a little more, which will leave you with money for a good scope.
A good general rule of thumb is that the scope should cost as much as the gun.

Does Walmart sell guns over there? If they do, watch for sales there. Your best bet for an inexpensive, reliable rifle would be a Stevens Model 200, which is made by Savage. If you have a bit more of a budget, you can move up to the new Savage rifles. And for a bit more, you can get a Remington 700. All are available in .270. And all should be available for less than your $800, which leaves you more money for your scope. DO NOT get a Remington 710 or 770. They are not the same as the 700, and have lots of quality issues.

As for your scope, look around online. You can order these there for a significant savings over retail.

If I were going for a complete set up like you are, I would get the Stevens 200 in .270, and then get a $60-100 Simmons brand variable power scope. Probably 3-9x. Neither one of those is top of the line. But they are good enough for many years of use, until you can save up enough money to buy something better. If you decide you need to, that is. The rifle will last indefinitely with proper care, and the scope has a lifetime warranty. For under $500, you are set for years of hunting.

Get a Remington 700 BDL with a 3×9 Leupold scope, you won’t regret it. As far as caliber, I don’t think a .270 cost more than the .243, though I did pay extra for a magnum and for my bolt action to be left handed. You didn’t state what you are going to be using it for but the .270 is a more versatile round for hunting.

RDG78 is correct, Savage makes some nice rifles well under your price range. A local shop here in Nampa Idaho called “alpha omega services” is running a package special, they have a nice savage rifle with free floated match barrel, a 3-9x40MM scope already bore sighted in any caliber for $399.95 you can always use a local shops FFl, send a copy to alpha omega along with payment for the rifle plus shipping, and they will ship it to your local shop who generally charges $25.00 to do the paperwork for you. So you would end up paying in the neighborhood of $ 475.00 with shipping and paperwork. Or, you can find one on sale online and do the same thing.

    P.S. great caliber choice!!

It seems like the Savage recommendation has been well represented here, so I’ll recommend the Tikka T3. It is one of my favorite rifles (and I have a lot), and I think it is the best value that you will find. They run between $500 and $600 new, and perform and feel more like a $1500 rifle.
By all means, take a look at the Savage, but take a good look at the Tikka while you’re at it.

  8. BOBBER says:

You could problery find a good combination at Wal-mart.

Price won’t change much from 243 to 270 on the new market. Even in Hawaii you should be able to find a good Savage, Remington 700, Ruger 77, and maybe even a Browning A-Bolt for under $600 and a great scope for less than $200. Yes what you are wanting should be doable.

    Good luck.
