My dog isn’t a Jack Russell. He’s kind of a mutt but he’s Terrier through and through. We never taught him anything but he still would up being the best rat/mouse/possum/rabbit killer we ever had. Your Jack may be inexperienced maybe, but I wouldn’t put it past him to try and kill a rat or mouse if he got the chance.
Did you have to train your jack to hunt? My jack is a city-bred dog, I’m wondering if he still has his hunting instincts.
@chinchillawrangler not if the dog has the vaccines up to date. not 100 percent sure though.my neighbors dog killed a possumm and i was thinking the same thing. not sure though need to ask a vet.

Obefore my Jack passed away of simple old age he chalked up one possum five mice three snakes almost a kitten stopped him doing that almost killed a grown cat though. muiltipule fights with cats maybe a scratch or cut here or there always properly takin care of it they were a worry . We love and miss that dog till this day .

your dog could get rabies from that. idk why youd let him touch that thing. but then again, its you letting your kill small animals or small animals digging holes in your walls and having babies. next time make sure you get that possum tested before letting it frolic with your pup
Awesome dog… I worry about my Feist getting possums. They have such a head full of teeth! Possums keep getting our chickens though and if she gets it I will cheer her on. Jacks and Feists are awesome dogs.
And to those whining about this dog dispatching a possum… let put a possum in your yard and see what you do. They are nasty animals and will kill anything. The dog is doing its job, and doing it well.
I always wonder what it would look like if my JRT got a hold of one, especially since I will be going to Ohio where plenty of small prey animals come into the yard. I will have to watch him – not that it would do any good by the looks of things. I’d be worried he’d get bit, but he’s a big boy – a bit bigger than yours and I am sure yours has the shark teeth to match as well! As for people being upset, when you have a certain breed of dog, it is interesting to see them actually work.

Welcome to reality. Dogs will kill other animals if they are dumb enough to come into the yard. Especially terriers.
And if you are dumb enough to go stick your hand between the dog and the possum… well given your comment, you probably are. Look forward to the video of you getting stitches and rabies shots.
