pall mall is near the tennesse, kentucky boarder.
pall mall is near tennesse, kentucky boarder line. I have a rare model 94 30-30 i have killed a 8,4,6 and a doe with it but nothing with my 270.
my 30-30 and 270 both have scopes and there is both open and heavy cover

Both
I’d recommend the 30-30.
I’d take the terrain and expected shot distance into consideration. if it’s more open definitely .270 however if you’ll be in thick wood, brush, swamp, etc. I’d go with the .30-30 they tend to be a bit shorter and quicker to handle, which makes it easier in those situations.
Either will work, but the .270 is far, far more powerful ballistically. If I had both, I’d leave the 30-30 at home. My .243 works WAY better than a 30-30 on hogs at any distance.
I think either cal. is good for hogs, the only question for me not knowing the terrain is; How much cover is there and how far are the shots going to be taken from? If I can’t see farther than 100 yds I’d go with the big slow 30 30. If I can glass and see out 200 – 300 yards, the .270 would be hard to beat.
* 30-30 * Use the 170 grain bullet for Best Performance and Accuracy.* Maximum effective range is 300 to 350 yards.*
first, break in the 270. second, lets not forget optics. with the appropriate magnification range, the 270 can be as effective at quick acquisition as the 3030. that makes it capable of handling short and long shots, whereas the other is really only good to 100 yards or so. 350 yards with a 30-30 is not realistic for the average shooter. if you had to come on here and ask, i can’t imagine you are a marine sniper. no offense.
Qbnsnizzle hit the nail on the head!
For the closer shots (100yards or in the brush) I’d go with the 30-30, For the farther shots I want the .270.
Seriously though, both of these calibers will be completely fine. How many hogs do you think were taken with either one of these caliber? Enough that I wouldn’t be worrying about it. In this case it would come down to you doing your part, if you can do that then the hog won’t notice, just make sure you use the one you shoot best with and have fun!
Since you’re hunting in “Alvin York country,” your 30-30 will be a better choice, because shots will tend to be at very short range, and quick handling is a priority in picking the rifle. But if you’re itching to use the 270, there’s certainly nothing wrong with it.
I have to warn you, I almost killed myself once hunting with a lever-action: I walked up on a herd and rolled three sows and two good-sized shoats, where I’d have been able to shoot only one or two with a bolt-action. By the time I dragged them all out of the woods, I thought I was going to have a heart attack!
If you are in the bush and shooting 100yds a 30-30 is best. If by chance you are in the wide open spaces the .270 with a good scope would be on my shoulder. Use a good hunting round.
