I’m looking to buy a shotgun that is good for both personal protection and hunting?

I’ve been looking into getting a new shotgun but need a good compromise of tight in-home protection with the ability to got duck hunting. Does anyone know a shotgun that will fit the bill without breaking the bank hopefully?

Mossberg 500 or Remington 870. Get one you can hunt with for around $300, and then buy a short barrel for home defense.

i don’t know to much about duck hunting but i think you have to have a normal length barrel (29, 30 in) but you probably want a short barrel for home protection so here’s how i would do it i would buy a gun from a pawn shot (i got a mossberg 20 gauge from a pawn shop for 200 dollars) the its should have a regular smooth bore the just buy another barrel for it that is shorter the when your at home have your short barrel on and when you head out to the field just put on you regular barrel

Remington 870, Mossberg 500, or Benelli Supernova.

The problem I see is that for home defense purposes, you want a shotgun with a short barrel (18 1/2″-22″). The reason being, so you can maneuver around your home without running into things, in the unlikely event that you have a situation that calls for using the shotgun. You want to be able to move freely at night as well. The longer the barrel, the more clumsy you can be in a high-stress, life threatening situation.

From a hunting perspective, you want a longer barrel to be able to shoot from longer ranges and keep a tighter pattern. Here, 26-28″ barrel would serve you best.

You may want to stick to a 24″ barrel for a happy medium decision. All three of those shotguns, should run you less than $400

Get the Remington 870 express it is a very reasonably priced pump action shotgun , that is excellent for duck hunting and for self defense. The sound of the pump is known to scare burglars. It is the reason police still use this type of action.

Mossberg makes feild a combo pack. Comes with a defense and a hunting barrel. Around $300

Mossberg 500 Field and Security Combo.
My first gun purchase… SUPER versatile.
Comes with a 28 inch fluted rifled barrel for hunting…. an 18.5 inch smooth bore barrel for home defense. Barrels can be swapped out by simply loosening the bolt at the end of the magazine tube.
It Comes with wooden stock and fore-end, and a polymer pistol grip so you can remove the stock and place the pistol grip there.

    Its a great gun.

get the remington 870 with the laminated wood stock and chambered in 2 3/4 in, its cheap and will never stop shooting if you take care of it. i have an 870 wingmaster express from the 70′s. and its one of our home defense guns. and the sound of it cycling has a great psychological effect
