What you may be excluding from your question is that the incident was reported they didn’t leave a dieing bullet ridden body in the woods they took him to the hospital. They didn’t call the press till the next day, I’m sure although the press how has hurt feelings they will live.
As for your hypothetical question I don’t know, one would hope the police would investigate the situation and find out what happened. One would also hope that the liberal media would not convict the man because he did not call them before anyone else.
