everything in north America, and a lot of African species. It can kill at 6 miles. 1000 yard shots are common in competition.

30-06 launches a 150 gr slug at 3000 fps, TONS of horsepower.

.30-06 is a great round for hunting any type of big game in North America, except for grizzlies or polar bears, of course. The range will vary depending on the rifle, but it should be very accurate to at least 300 yards, maybe 500 (I’ve never made a longer shot than that, but I’m sure some one has) if you practice with it.

  3. AKpilot says:

.30-06 is well suited for most North American game. I would not use it for brown bear, bison, or muskox.
A .30-06 can shoot between 3500 yards and 5500 yards depending on the load. The distance at which it is accurate depends on you and the rifle.

  4. Sharpshooter says:

30-06 is a great old cartridge. If you want to take a real long shot, (over 500 yards) you’d be better suited with a .300 WSM or a .300 ultra magnum. It all depends on the rifle.

If you handload, the choices expand for the 30-06. The 200-220 grain bullets are used regularly in Siberia on the biggest Brown bears in the world by 7.62Nato/308Win users, a cartridge about 5% smaller than the ’06, and uses the same bullets. A good reloading manual like the Hornady can set you up with tutorials and loading specifics, etc. Conversely, those who use a strongly constructed 180 grain bullet to limit expansion on deer and therefore the gross meat damage, can experience the bullets not expanding at all by missing ribs and sailing through the lungs punching a tiny hole. The ’06 is just too powerful for regular deer. Reduced recoil loadings offer a way around this, with better expanding bullets at moderate velocity for reliable kills and modest meat damage. And less recoil to distract your aim, for better shooter accuracy. The reloading manual offers the possibility of making your own such loads, tuned and matched for regular deer, perhaps duplicating traditional actual deer cartridge specs. The 30-06 was designed to shoot through an earthen embankment and then through a steel helmet. Lotsa power! But is purely political that they are declared by some to be “perfect for deer”. Perfect for moose is more accurate. Regards, Larry.

I’ve owned multiple 30-06 rifles and they are my favorite cartridge. You are good for everything from coyote to moose or even large bears depending on bullet weight and type. Range for realistic hunting is 300 yards. If you can’t get closer you aren’t really hunting!

I reload 165 grain bonded bullets and would not hesitate to take an elk or moose at 300 yards. I get a 5 shot group I can cover with a quarter at 100 yards consistently. I’ve actually dropped bison with the 165 grain. With 220 grain bullets it is the minimum caliber to use on truly large bears. It isn’t something I would use as a big bear in the brush gun, but an open shot would be fine.

The 30-06 is a great cartridge mainly because people can comfortably shoot it and become proficient. I could shoot a 338 RUM, or a 458 Lott, but I’m not going to be as happy shooting them. I can shoot my A-bolt all day and just be a little sore next day. My 11 year old has shot mine, but it isn’t something I would let him shoot multiple times yet. I bought my first 06 when I was 14, and have always owned one.

You should tell us what model rifle you bought.

usually big game like deer and elk. u can use it on hogs too because it’s powerful enough to penetrate it’s shoulders and head. it can usually reach out too 600 yards plus accurately.

that is a great gun i wanted one since i was six of course i didn’t get it but it can shot a good 200 yards accuratly with a good scope and you can hunt moose, deer, bear, but it is a big game, thick-skin rifle. a good african rifle also!! good luck hope this helped!!

You can hunt anything from prairie dog to Kodiak with a .30-06. Although on both ends of the spectrum you would need to use custom hand loads. Most factory loads are accurate out to 800 yards with a good marksman behind the rifle. Beyond that you are back to custom hand loads which can and have been accurate out to 1200 yards reliably and with authority.

Authority means it will still kill what you are shooting at. In the case I am thinking Big Horn Sheep and the range finder said 1027 yards. I was along as camp cook and saw the shot. The scope was an older Zeiss and the rifle was a Mannlicher-Schönauer in .30-06 and had the first stock I had ever seen going all the length of the barrel. This was in 1975 and I offered the owner $500.00 for the rifle. The hunter was from Austria and told me that would not even buy a replacement scope. The rifle had been custom made for his father and was one of the first to have the new .30-06 round. It had cost 8700.00 Austrian Marks in 1908 and the scope had been added just after WWII for about 1500 AM. I figured it out and at 1975 exchange rates that rifle cost more than I had made in the last five years.

You can Hunt deer in minnesota!!!

  11. Tinman12 says:

With a 30-06, if it moves, you can take it out. But it would be an awful waste of ammo to go rabbit hunting with it. It will take down easily any bear, deer or large mammal.
You will never go hungry hunting for game with that kind of rifle. Providing of course that there is big game in your area.

  12. T.Long says:

The .30-06 is an amazing round that has killed just about every animal on the planet. Though, when you get to the bigger stuff like larger grizzlies, and large African game, there are better choices. But, no other cartridge has served purposes as well as the ’06. It itself is fairly accurate, and can shoot quite a distance with much practice.

  13. mtn man says:

with a 220 grain rem. core lok shell you can kill any animal in north america you come across.depends on bullet wght a sniper in ‘nam with the most confirmed kills used a 30.06

  14. Bob says:

Realistically the 30-06 with premium bullets will hunt anything indigenous to North America, it’s effective hunting rage is at a maximum of 400 yards for deer and less the bigger animal you are hunting, the closer you should be

  15. Reno says:

Well I guess you get it that it is versatile.

As far as range, you will not out shoot the gun. More than likely you will engage animals within 200 meters, usually around 50 meters.

However, a light 150 grain Hornady Light Magnum Inter-bonded bullet will shoot very flat out to 300 meters. Zero at 200 meters, and be 6 inches low at 300 meters. This is a long way off, and I doubt you will need it.

    Good luck

  16. akluis says:

anything that moves in North America has at one time or another been killed with a 30-06, including grizzly bear and polar bear.

Now, if you are shooting grizzly, you need to be relatively close, but as far as deer…at any range that you can accurately shoot, the 30-06 will do the job.
