How do you feel about wearing hunter orange?

Alaska is one of the state that does not require hunter orange to be worn while hunting. Some folks say game animals don’t see the orange, some say they can. Have you had a hunting experience where you feel the orange gave you away and made hunting more difficult?

as an everyday use, it is awesome as shit. some animals can see color.

  2. eddieM says:

Yes, they can see it… not the color but that it isn’t natural. Even so, I would wear it to be safe.

  3. Ray says:

no, it doesn’t scare away the game. I just felt stupid.

  4. FuCH says:

my state requires it except for bow hunting but it has never given me away if im in an open area ill take it off anyway just in case

  5. LAC says:

I wear hunter orange because of the knotheads hunting in this area. It is not required but in the last couple of years there have been way to many people that shouldn’t even own a gun hunting in my area.

never had an animal see it and run
but i just feel like a dumb ass for wearing camo and florescent orange.

How do I feel? Like a jerk. It’s been my experience that if the idiots are going to shoot you, whatever you’re wearing isn’t going to help. (Besides, the human mind recognizes pattern and motion BEFORE it sees color anyway.)

I once swung on a breaking bird; and, at the last second, I pulled the barrel up. My eye had caught the silhouette and movement of another hunter moving in front of my barrel BEFORE I saw his orange hat. He was very lucky it was me swinging that shotgun. I’ve hunted with plenty of guys who would have simply pulled the trigger and bagged the both of them.

I wear the orange to the stand but once im in i take it off and sit on it

I dont care what scientists say………They can see it and I dont like hunter orange because it compromises my position!

BUT…Thats why I hunt black powder season…(No blaze orange)…I can hunt in my dark brown buckskins and in the deep forest..I am virtually…invisible ! aaaand ! I almost never see any one out hunting where I go anyway!

    Murphy’s law ( I forget what number) # Remember….if your enemy is in range….so are you !

To be honest I have never had a deer spot me as a result of having hunter orange on.And tests show that they do not have the same color perception as humans do. But I feel that one big blob of a certain color will make you stand out more then a color that is broken up.I am sure that others will have a different experience with it then I have. But in the crowded areas on public land where most people hunt, it is a necessary evil to have. I am sure that someone such as yourself that hunts in a vast area that is used by real hunters cannot picture what it is like on opening day hunting in a public state management area with John Q.Public. This alone is the reason I started to bow hunt years ago. On opening day only about 25% of the hunters are true experienced hunters. 75% will be those that will bring a box of shells and after not seeing a deer the first 30 minutes will start shooting any animal, bird. rabbit. squirrel, targets (even though that’s illegal) until their ammo is shot up and they go home until next year. This is why on opening day you will hear a thousand shots and there will only be 50-75 deer checked out. Not all management areas are this crowded, but the ones nearest the larger metropolitan areas are. It’s scary.

For groundhog hunting i’m nutral on it.. I know that i’ve already got seen with the orange hat on… Groundhogs are color blind… So they can pick up on light colored objects… Orange = light object… But i know that in 4ft grass at 400 yards a human head can look like a groundhog head…

As for big game hunting… There has already been a time where i was sitting on a rock at top of a hill, 3 guys came walking the powerline about 100 yards under me… kicked up some deer..they opened up , crossing my path!!! after about the 3rd or 4th shot i heard a bullet zing off the big rock that i was sitting on… Thats all it took, down on the other side of the rock i went!!!… AND I was wearing orange,, that was the sad part… Can you say tunnel vision?

Its not required in NV either, but i wear at least a baseball cap in blaze orange, sometimes even if im just hiking.

Why? Because, its a proven fact that a human looks EXACTLY like a game animal when viewed through a cheap chinese walmart scope on top of a crappy rem 770 carried by an idiot who just finished hunter’s ed and cannot wait to bag his first deer, just so he can puke on his shoes when he starts to gut it and ruins half the meat in the process.

    No , im not bitter……

it saves lives. i think it is worth it

I can’t think of a situation where my orange gave me away. I personally love it here in buck season. there’s .30 cal bullets flying all around the Pennsylvania woods!! Small game and birds and such I don’t really need it.

  15. Crashn87 says:

I can’t say I’m overly fond of orange but in NE it was a requirement for deer season. I never had a problem with the deer spotting me but if we were just sitting somewhere, we usually were fairly well concealed anyway. For all other types of hunting I just wore worn out street clothes and never had a problem. I really think technique is more important than what you’re wearing.

    I live in the UK.

As yet my Government has not told me what I can or can’t wear in when hunting. Some of the other European countries do and this includes their working dogs.

  17. wana bigger bike says:

i dont think the animals see the orange. now i have heard that deer can see the UV brighteners in clothing so if thats true and your blaze orange has them you will suposedly apear as a blue blob or something like that.

and honestly i dont think that you need camo. yes its fun to buy and wear and makes you feel cool and who doesnt like buying new stuff but its probably one of the least necesary parts of a hunting set up.

  18. John D says:

I believe that by wearing hunters orange compared to camouflage, you will protect yourself from blind inexperienced hunters. Generally the sound you make in the woods and the smell you make will give your position away far before the animal you are hunting sees you. I am more than sure that the animals we hunt can differentiate a plain piece of clothing better than a pixelated piece of clothing or a piece of clothing broken into different patches. So to go crawling around in the woods in Alaska where the population per square mile is one of the lowest in the world, go ahead get a leg up on the animals in their environment and wear camo. Unless you plan on dying in the bush, then wear hunters orange so the search parties can find you faster.
