Enlisting…?

Alright, here I’ll start this with a little about myself. Im a sophmore in High School in Indiana. I get decent grades (Bs with a C here or there) usually around a 3.0ish GPA. My dads a cop for IPD and my moms a teacher. I have alot of friends that brothers are in the Military and have had a few friends go in and that are in the process right now. My girlfriends brother was the biggest influence on me to join (He did 2 tours in Iraq, so far, as a Marine)

So yeah, I want to enlist in the Navy as GM (Gunners Mate). I used to go hunting with my uncle alot before he pasted away. Lol Im not saying Im a gun expert or a dead eye, Im not, but I have a decent shot. Im serious about this and am going to do this. It would be cool to talk to a GM or x-GM out there, or get some information on something I should do to get ready for joining. I dont want any of those smart@ss comments about not joining or anything, just helpful advice please. So what should I know (I know about what GMS have to do
and that its not all “shoot em up” or necessarily not having to do with guns depending what you end up assigned to. So I dont really need information on the basics of the rate. So the question is…

- What do I need to know for the ASVAB, for trying to become a GM? (Ive already gotten some stuff from recruiters about it but they tend to not tell the truth about everything)
- Can I get “A” school in my enlistment contract?
- Whats are the rules about joining when you are 17? Because I have 30 of my 42 credits I need to graduate so I can get out of High School after my Junior year.

Thanks alot

It might be a wise idea to talk to a recruiter in your area. They would be able to give you more information and tell you what you need to do to prepare for the Navy. Good Luck!

I think the ASVAB is a lot of common sense. I don’t think you can choose what exactly you want to do in the military.

Although I’m one of those liberals that you despise so much, here goes… ;)

For the ASVAB, you need a good general knowledge of reading comprehension, grammar, word/spelling knowledge, math, basic physics/engineering principles as it deals with mechanics and car stuff.

It’s a pretty easy test, nowhere near as challenging as an SAT or ACT.

I did have an “A” school in my contract. If you choose one, just make sure it is in writing or it has no validity. You can get an “A” school when you sign up if there is availability.

I joined as 17 (I graduated at 17). My parents had to sign for me.

If you’re not athletic, I’d work on my running, push-up and sit-up skills.

good luck I can not give you an instant answer re the gunners mate thing but maybe some with a bit more ‘know’ will be able to help BUT I did hear that gunners mate was being phased out or at least merged with some other trade…………ALSO and this is just a mums advice make sure you have a trade that is of USE in the real life………………….my husband just got out after 21 years and hun there is no job market for a sonar tech……………so please think about that more than anything else.

Get the book guide for studying for your asvab the better grade you get the more they will try to work with you………..book is available at any good book store and well worth the investment, as it is broken down into your strengths and weaknesses.

    Good luck and have fun

Get as much information from your recruiter as you can and remember; NOTHING the recruiter says matters unless its IN the contract.

You are not able to join until you are a junior in HS. If you are 17 your parents will have to sign for you. Visit much valuable infor in that site. Whatever the recruiter tells you get it in writting in your contract otherwise it is worth didly squat!!! They will lie to you and tell you what you want to hear so make sure they put it in your contract. The asvab is not difficult you’ll do fine if you get the grades you say you do. I tool after being out of school for 5 years and did good. Consider a skill that you can transfer to real world…. you will still have the chance to take a secondary mos later. Good luck
