Does anyone raccoon hunt?

I am a 22 yr old female, and I have went coon hunting since I was 6 years old and I love it! There’s nothing like hearing the dogs treeing. Last coon season ( I live in Indiana), I took some guy friends for thier first time, and I had to show them how to do everything! And they are the country type guys too. I was just wondering how popular coon hunting is in your area. Like I said, I am from Terre Haute, Indiana. And also, my dog of choice is a a walker.

Alot of people here in MI shoot coons. There are tons of them. All we do is walk thru the woods in broad daylight a spot them sleeping on tree limbs. They are a nuisance and we try to control their numbers.

Not enough raccons out west in the desert here, we hunt coyote instead. Totally different tactics, but a good time still.

Not that many people do it that way where I have been. Its alot of fun and rabid coons are a big problem in many areas of the south and east. There is a major over population problem. My brother lives in the country and a old house down the road that is vacant is called the coon hotel……there are about 50 coons living in there…..and they make all kinds of noises in there at night. Most of them have rabies…..he has shot a few coming in the yard during the day…….growling and fearless. All of them had rabies that were tested.

Good for you you are doing a service. Coons don’t have enough predators anymore.

There aren’t many coon hunters any more here in Louisiana. The bounty paid for hides is only about $1, and besides that most of the land here is private and posted. Several pens in the south still hold coon hound field trials and a good dog can make an owner alot of money, but as far as recreational coon hunting goes, it’s not very popular here.

I live and Pennsylvania and I never hear people talking about coon hunting around here. You mostly here about deer, pheasant and turkey around my area.

There not really around much if at all in my state. It’s kinda like squirrel but we have squirrel. There are so few of them there’s no point in hunting them.

There’s a lot of us that coon hunt in S GA.
I like any dog with a good nose, voice, and disposition…but I prefer a redbone, plott, or cur.

I don’t hunt them. I do trap them not for fun. They are a pest and cause a lot of property damage to me. They eat livestock feed get into the barns and make a big mess.

I wish I had someone to hunt these sometime. I can’t even find anyone to take the ones I catch.

Here in Northeastern Louisiana it is very popular. My buddies and I go 2-3 times a week. My preference in dogs is a Redbone.
