deer hunting good pump action rifle?
Byi want a pump action rifle for deer hunting but also for just normal target practice so cheaper the ammo the better. i cant find a 30-30 pump, lots of 30-06 pumps but im thinking that might be a little big for just having fun shooting bottles or what ever.. no1 likes a sore shoulder. and cant find a 25-06 in pump, is there any other options?
thanks!!

There is only one major gun manufacturer in the US that currently makes a pump action rifle. And that is the Remington model 7600. This rifle is only available in 2 calibers, a .270 and a 30/06
In the past, they did make one as small as a 243 but you will have to buy a used one if you can find it.
You may have to go with a semi-auto such as a Browning to get a smaller caliber. The cost would be almost the same as the pump would be.

Remington make a pump action rifle which also comes in .308win (model 7600) and .223rem (model 7615). I have a 308win and although they aren’t the most accurate or reliable action rifle and sometimes the most frustrating but they are fun to use . You can also get a pistol grip stock that has a rubber butt pad which will reduce recoil and shoulder stress. but really Remington is the only pump action center fire rifle available.

It’s been my general experience that pump action firearms make lousy hunting rifles. The fore-ends are too loose to take a solid aim with; and, oftentimes, the action bar(s) seem to release with the shot and your follow-through isn’t what it should be.
Before I’d take a 30-30, I’d go 35 Remington. The 25-06 is good for everything from varmints to large deer; and it’s one of the better long-range calibers. If you plan to do most of your shooting inside, say, 150 yards a 35 Rem will do you just fine and the ammo is plentiful.
If you plan on shooting at 200 yards + the 25-06 would be a better choice; but you’ll have to stock up on ammo ahead of time. (Which most of us do anyway!)

I have the 7600 carbine and I use 150 grain for target to keep from getting the sore shoulder. Pretty sweet shooting little gun.

like newel said, a used savage 170 30-30 is your best bet. you still see them around occasionally at gun shows & gun shops & pawn shops in small towns.
a Remington model 7600 or used model 760 in .243 caliber would be ideal for a low recoil pump action deer rifle.
Browning also made the BPR pump in many calibers from .243 to 300 win mag but you don’t see many of them. I assume they still make them.
the Taurus thunderbolt in 45 colt is another option. I’m not sure if their rated for the 44 mag equivalent heavy 45 colt loads but even standard 45 loads would be adequate for very short range deer hunting.

I hate to say it, but man up. I hunt in Pa with a remington 7600 30-06, and I have no problem with the recoil. Granted, the 30-06 is not a target rifle per sei, but thats why I have a .22.

You will be lucky to find a pump in 25/06 anywhere. They were as rare as the 6mm Rem and 35 Whelen a necked up 30/06. I’ve only seen one in existence in my area in 25/06 in a 760. And he wouldn’t sell it to save his life. The Savage is more of a collectors gun in 30/30. And there’s always the NE Handi Rifles for the budget hunter and available in a fine list of calibers including the 25/06 and 30/30.
