can someone help me with bird/duck id?

i keep seeing these birds when im duck hunting they look like ducks with chicken beaks they are black about the size of a teal and dive and they don’t really fly its more like running on the water.
if it helps im in Wisconsin

    You may be seeing loons…they are not exactly black this time of year,but a little later on they do get darker.

    In the south we call them coots. The are considered too fishy tasting to eat, though some people eat them anyway.

    yep. sounds like coots to me. ive also heard them nicknamed mud hen. the daily bag limit in my state is 15. i dont shoot them though. i have been told they arent very tasty. i let them play in my decoys.

    coots are black and have yellowish chicken like beaks…run on the water into the wind to get airborn. A nickname we have for them is “mudhen”. Another possibility is a grebe..they are lighter in color and sort of just slowly “sink” beneath the surface of the water……
