Boar and Sheep hunting in California?
ByI am going to be going to california sometime soon, I live in PA, and was wondering what type of rifle to take for boar and big horn sheep.
I will not be buying a new rifle or anything like that, my options for artillery are
30-30
.270
.300 win mag
.300 savage
.308 (not sure if i can get ahold of it yet)
.223
7mm
those are my options
if you have any ideas or what gun will work best and what ammo would work best for sheep and boar please let me let me know
also if you know anywhere where i would be able to hunt or where i can get a guide to take me hunting in northern california that would be super helpful too!
also i have a 30-06 pump i can use

I don’t think they have any big horn sheep, and I know they don’t have any boar in California. For boar, you can’t really find them west of Texas.

While there is Desert Big Horn Sheep out here, I don’t think their on the list for big game to be taken out here. You’ll have to check the fish and game regulations.
As far as boar hunting, the .300 win mag or the 7 mm rem mag should work just fine.

You can kiss your sheep hunt goodbye — only 1 nonresident tag is pulled each year. This means if your family applies each year, your great great great grandson might be able to hunt.
Here’s a good article on California hogs. It doesn’t give any outfitter names, but does tell you where the range is.
I like that 30-06 pump

30-06 would be my first choice. 180gr lead. make sure your not in the lead-free condor range though. That’s mostly in the southern part of the state. Other than 30-06, i would feel comfortable with every gun you listed, save maybe the 30-30.
And they’re are private herd management hunts for sheep, though i wouldn’t call it hunting. It’s more like shooting a cow.
