best rifle for hunting?
Bywhat’s a vesatile rifle from hunting ducks to deers? caliber?
im quite new to this hunting game.
my dad already has a shotgun, so im plannin on buying a rifle instead.
- is there a versatile rifle for hunting ducks to deers?
- bolt action or semi auto?
- caliber?
i dont have a permanent hunting place yet, i figure id just try different places first to see which one i’ll like. i was hoping i could have a versatile rifle because i still dont have a clue wether i’d like hunting fowls or mammals more.

You can’t hunt ducks with a rifle legally anywhere in the USA. If you plan on using dads shotgun that’s fine.
A Remington model 700 SPS 30-06 is your best all around rifle in the lower 48

you can’t legally use a rifle for hunting birds but a rem 700 30-06 would be best if you can’t afford it the savage 111 30-06 is also a good rifle

Honestly, you seem truly inexperienced. I mean no offense, but you should seek guidance from an experienced hunter/marksman. I will start you off, that you really can’t use a rifle for water-foul hunting. You will need a shotgun if you are going to pop birdies. Stick with a shotgun. My very first deer was taken with a 20 gauge bolt action Mossberg (my very first gun ever…). Just get a shotgun, load it up with slugs, and it works great for deer. Load it with #6 or so, and you are game for birds. End of discussion.

You can’t duck hunt with a rifle. You may want to start with dad’s shotgun, if it fits, and pick a rifle later, when you have some experience.

You could pick up a rifle shotgun combo gun. All you have to do is switch barrels between whatever it is you want to hunt.

I just want to say one thing. Do not let someone tell you you need to buy some large magnum caliber rifle like a 300 mag or a 338 lapua to hunt deer, ive seen it done so many time it is not funny. when i was younger and stupid i killed all my deer at night with a 22mag. of course that was head shooting but still a 243, or a 308 would do you just fine i have 2 308s and i have never had a deer run off that i could not find.

You can’t hunt ducks or any other birds with a rifle. You’ll never hit them, its illegal, and its not safe to shoot a bullet that will go 5 miles up into the air. That said, I recommend a bolt action. I have shot semi’s, bolts, pumps, levers, and bolt action is by far my favorite. Its a great mix of accuracy and functionality. For caliber I would go for .270-.300 (including 30.06 .280). I use a .270, but would recommend a 30.06 because with different bullet weights you can hunt any big game in North America with it. There are many good rifle companies. The most cost effective and best quality for the price is the remington 700. Also any other gun gun by remington, ruger, browning, and more (Have used rifles by these companies with satisfaction). If you decide your a bird hunting guy get a shotgun by any of the same companies (if you’ve got cash look at beretta or benelli). The remington 870 is a great gun. Go for 12 gauge. You can take down turkey, partridge and anything in-between with a 12. Good luck.
