Both. He needs to be trained in a starting pen if at all possible. This speeds up the rabbit training process by showing him more rabbits quickly. There are alot of training pens. You can check out the major registration sites (AKC UKC NKC) for kennels and email a few to find out local pens. Once your hound gets the hang of it, take him a few times by himself to a place where there are quite a few rabbits. Just walk with him through the woods or fields. Hopefully you will see one out that you may be able to lead him over to and get him to run it. Then take him a few times with other dogs so as he can see what they do and may help him learn a few tricks. I learned hunting from someone, and I am sure they need to as well. We just started a 5 month old gyp this way. She is going good with the other dogs and we will start solo running her next week. As far as guns, why kill them when you can run them again? If you do shoot, make sure your dog is running good and not gun shy. Make sure you let the rabbit "circle" back before you shoot with a young dog.

It is a good idea to have your beagle run with some experienced beagles-he will catch on quick, and it will also give you the chance to take a good look at the way these dogs work when trained. When at home-stick to training basic obedience-especially recall. Get it into his head that it is NEVER okay to ignore you when you ask him to come back. Always use a long leash when training recall, and never allow him to not listen-reel him in if he doesn't come the first time you ask.
It isn't a bad idea to introduce him to rabbits while at home before taking him out though-don't let him 'have' one, but get him introduced to it, and get him amped up and his drive going.
Also, keep in mind to never let him 'eat' or destroy the rabbit or any rabbit skins you may be using for training-it will be the beginning of a habit which is very had to break once it starts. A good hunting dog never destroys the prize, but leaves it in prime condition for his master.

Here is an article of what you should bring along with you on a rabbit hunt-it's well written and gives some good information;

Also, a good article covering the basics of training for hunts;

NO train your Beagle independently by itself.* Do not run it with any other Beagle.* All you have to do is just get it out in the fields and woods as often as possible.* Preferably every other day.* Just make sure the Beagle will come to you when called.* Go by yourself when in the training process.* For further training and information, or addressing guns contact me.*

Its the easiest to train them around other dogs. Train simple commands at home and then run him with other dogs and he will pick it up fast. If he is a good hunter then you can train him yourself easily.. my springer took to flushing birds without any training and he instinctively stayed within sight and worked a zig-zag pattern in the direction of my travel. Purpose bred hunting dogs of a good blood line have hunting built into their instinct.

Yeah.. you want to take a gun lol My walker hounds catch rabbits all the time on my property but I wouldn't use them for actual hunting.

I use my springer for cottons and swamps but I have to put him on a leash or he will flush without command and run the rabbits off. I just use his nose to find them.. hes got a good nose.
